Free to Play Quickslot Guide: Jedi Sage Balance

The purpose of this guide is to help you to effectively and fully play your class and spec using only the two quickslot bars that Free to Play option players are given.  Of course, it's always possible to spend a few dollars to unlock a few more quickslots, but if you really would like to play for free, this guide will help you to do so.

This works because not every ability you are going to get as you level up is useful or necessary for your particular class or your particular spec.  This guide will tell you which abilities to keep on your bar and which ones to remove.  In the vast majority of cases, there is no harm or sacrifice whatsoever in giving up the abilities that this guide will tell you to.  Those few instances where it is a bit of a sacrifice will be noted.  If you would like to hear more in depth reasoning behind why certain abilities are being kept or removed, the video version of this guide does provide that.  The video guide also goes into greater depth as a whole and should be viewed if possible.

Step 1: Setting Things up at Level 1

Abilities which will be on your quickbars when you finish character creation:

  • Saber Strike
  • Double Strike
  • Project
  • Meditation
  • Force Valor     ---------- Remove this from bar, access from menu
  • Quick Travel    ---------- Remove this from bar, access from menu
The removed abilities are not necessary to have on the bar and are used infrequently.  They can be accessed when necessary from the full ability list by pressing P.

Step 2: Culling Unnecessary Abilities

As you level, simply train every ability that is offered to you, as they will all be useful at lower levels and it is good to get a feel for them.  However, as you reach higher levels some of these will become unnecessary.  When you find yourself out of room on your quickslot bars, simply remove any of the following abilities. Most are completely unnecessary.  Any which would be useful but must be given up for the sake of space will be noted.
  • Heroic Moment -------- Swap onto bar temporarily if having difficulty with a certain fight.
  • Force Potency --------- Useful, but unnecessary for leveling
  • Cloud Mind
  • Rescue
  • Project
Note: as a Sage, you might also take saber strike off of your bar.  I have chosen to leave it, as it is the only free ability and I like to always have a resource independent attack on the bar just in case.  However, this is by far the least necessary for a sage out of any of the classes, so if you would like to try playing without it, it is certainly a reasonable idea.

Step 3: Passive Abilities Which Never Need to Be on the Bar

Certain abilities that you have are passive.  They are either on or off, and once activated will remain on and can be removed from your bars to save space.  If necessary, they can be accessed from the master ability list by pressing P.  When you train these, activate them and then remove them from your bar.
  • Sprint

Step 4: Abilities You Do Not Need to Train

Certain abilities never need to be trained because they are completely unnecessary for your spec at any time.  The following abilities do not need to be trained.  If they are trained, do not use them and remove them from your bars.
  • Tumult

Step 5: Ability Swaps

Certain specs will have one or more abilities which should be replaced on your quickbar by a different ability when it is learned at a higher level.  Typically, this replacement is not only to save space but is part of the class design itself.  The following abilities should be swapped.

  • There are no swaps for this spec

  1. Mind Maze is a shadow ability not a sage just thought I'd let you know :).

  4. You would not use Saber strike either as balance is a ranged class I could mock up a 24 slot setup for balance if you would like.

  5. You're right about Mind Maze... I know both classes well, but I did Shadow first and missed taking this one off! Thanks for the mention... its fairly tedious going through and doing each class and spec, so I am bound to have made a little mistake like this here and there but they can be fixed if nice folks point them out like this.

As for saber strike, the reason I leave it on there is because I will always use the level 1 free ability on there for every class just in case you run out of energy. It's honestly probably far far less of a need to do this for the Sage, but I think its a good enough principle to keep it anyways. I will add a note mentioning that you can take it off if you like.

If you'd like to post up the 24 things you'd have in there, go for it I will take a look at it. Or, it might even be easier if there are any particular items you think should be different, let me know and explain why.

  6. Yeah I will sort one out for you for abilities you need to have I will also stick them in some sort of order so there is a particular rotation :)
